california + the city \\ part 1

Our much anticipated trip to California ended this past week but in its place took wonderful memories, pictures, exhausted bodies and totally full spirits.

I remember vividly last year when Jared, myself, David and Rachel sat in a small mom-and-pop diner in Stillwater, and had the idea to plan a trip to San Francisco and wine country together. You know how it goes... all talk and big ideas in the beginning, but then you actually make something happen and it turns into the most exciting planning ever.

We spent a few days in downtown San Fran, and then drove up the coast to Sonoma and Napa Valley for another few days. Wine country. :) More about that in a following post - first, it was the city. And we loved San Francisco! The architecture was so different, the colors of the houses so diverse, the hills, the ocean, the varied cultures, the food! We packed as much in as our bodies could handle, and filled each day with non-stop adventure, navigating the city and public transit, new experiences, and laughing a whole lot.

Our first day in the city was also my birthday. We wandered the city in the morning, saw the pier, visited the Ghirardelli factory, hiked the hills, walked Lombard street, found some quality deli's for wine + cheese, and (a must see for Rachel & I) was to visit the painted ladies while singing the Full House theme song on the hill. Just to name a FEW high points of our day! We did so much.

Despite how foggy it was right around the bay, the weather was quite pleasant to be a tourist! Low 60s but never any rain, so we were quite comfortable. But it could change in a heartbeat, which is why I'm so thankful people told us to pack layers!

Rachel and I had purposefully watched The Princess Diaries the week before we left, and so when we wandered into the arcade right off Fisherman's wharf and found this guy, we were pretty pumped. Dad, I thought of you when I touched something Julie Andrews has touched! (along with how many thousands of other people) ;)

My birthday sundae at Ghirardelli Square. Best sundae I've had in my lifetime. Chocolate, caramel, whipped cream and the creamiest ice cream ever. Pretty good way to celebrate my 26th birthday, I'd say!

Maybe the highlight of the day was our first ever experience sailing! It was a bit chilly out on the water, but we made due, and I will never forget the experience of being on a boat that was meant to roll around on the water like that. Honestly thought we were goin' in a time or two! I will never forget it. Watching the sail unfurl, the boom swing around, and when the wind caught, we were flying!

The Alcatraz experience as a whole was amazing. Another major highlight! Initially I was a little bummed that we wouldn't be able to see across the bay to the city, but in retrospect I think the island and all it symbolizes was even more enchanting looking like this!

Recommendation: the audio tour is amazing. Hearing from actual past guards and past inmates was captivating! Favorite part: seeing the cells that some escapes were made from and how they chiseled away with spoons at the air ducts for years before being able to slip through. Second favorite part: seeing the explosion marks in the floor from breakout scuffles and the rugged and chipping metal and paint, knowing that I was walking and looking at a place most people would have killed to get out of.

We escaped the rock! :) The sun broke through as we were leaving the island, and though the Golden Gate bridge was still shrouded in clouds, we had a beautiful view of the city and Bay bridge.

After our morning at Alcatraz we headed to pick up the car and make the trip across the bay over to Sausalito for the afternoon. It was so quaint and we had a really good time strolling the boardwalk, lunching at an outdoor patio, and beginning the more relaxing portion of our trip.

Sausalito was a town totally unique to the vibe of the city - the houses stacked up on the hills, the beautiful sailboats, quaint shops and restaurants, quiet walks, but one drive up the mountain, and you would have thought we were in a different state. It became arid and rocky, and then the next minute you were in muggy, almost rainforest climate up by the redwoods. We did make a quick stop at Muir Woods National park for good measure to see the big redwoods before we continued onto Sonoma.

Our first few days in the city totally delivered. Jared and I have already talked about going back! But onto wine country we went, and it was JUST as impressive in a totally different way.... more to follow... :)

her birthday.

In my industry, we often see people “take over” an organization’s Twitter or Facebook account as a way to create more customer engagement. For instance, a company's president may answer a series of questions or a professional athlete may give a shout out to fans over twitter. Today, my hope in “taking over” Skyler’s personal blog is not necessarily to build customer engagement, but to tell her just 25 things I love about her on her 25th birthday—her golden birthday, I might add.

Recently she’s done tributes to her dad, nephew, long-distance friends, and closely related moms, so my hope today is to compose a tribute to her.

Here are just some of the things I love and appreciate about you, Skyler.

1. Your commitment to Christ.
2. Your genuine spirit.
3. Your devotion to me and to our marriage.
4. Your smile.
5. Your ability to decorate a home… within budget!
6. Your prayer life.
7. Your sacrificial attitude—driving 50 minutes to work each way!
8. Your willingness to keep me accountable.
9. Your longing for close friendships.
10. Your desire to capture all of our moments on camera.
11. Your (non) green thumb.
12. Your encouragement for my personal and professional growth.
13. Your time mentoring younger girls and desire to be mentored.
14. Your desire to be healthy.
15. Your love for football, baseball, hockey, and other sports.
16. Your compassion for those without a voice.
17. Your heart of a caretaker.
18. Your embrace of my family.
19. Your creativity.
20. Your vocabulary about your job, which is completely foreign to me.
21. Your love for the little things (wearing a scarf, drinking a London fog, sunning).
22. Your excitement to travel.
23. Your random (mini) tangents.
24. Your maturity in immature situations.
25. Your readiness to serve others, no matter what the opportunity.

Happy 25th birthday, beautiful.

his birthday.

this year was a fun birthday. jared turned 25! a quarter of a century old, as he told himself all day.

so handsome. :)we had a pretty stacked weekend which included celebrations at two new restaurants, (both scored big!)time with both friends and our families, which we felt very blessed by, and  some much needed alone time. the weather was gorgeous over his special weekend, so we made a point to break out our skates, and we weren't sorry!

my husband is the special-est thing in my life. this being the 5th birthday we celebrated together, and it only reminded me of how much more i love him every. single. year.

enter some (sappy - be warned) reasons...

- he makes a mean egg sandwich (don't judge me for that being #1, we like our eggs :)
- i know i always come before his work, even though he has to work a lot
- i know he works a lot because he is committed to his job and our family
- seeing him back in school reminds me just how hard of a worker he is
- he makes me laugh. plain and simple.
- he had tried many new foods for me over the past couple years - and is such a sport about it
- he warms up my freezing toes without complaining
- he doesn't complain
- i see him studying his Bible daily. he inspires me.
-  he kills spiders for me. and doesn't look down on me for leaving them under cups until he comes home.
- he does the dishes. and not just when he feels sorry for something. daily.
- he makes me smile when i think about him. that's new and i love it.
- i see him growing. and maturing. himself alone and with me - it's a wildly beautiful process that is drawing me to him even more.

HAPPY (belated) 25th BIRTHDAY TO MY BEST FRIEND. you are the sweetest, most genuine man i have ever known. i'm so blessed to be yours. :) here's to another growing year!

the birthday boy

It was Jared's birthday yesterday! Aside from both of us working a full day, it was spent very relaxed, enjoying each others company, and relishing the fact that there were no sporting events to be at, no stories to write, and nothing to do besides be together.

We tried out a new restraunt that we've been wanting to for awhile, Chianti Grill, and it delivered. Their free birthday desserts were Creme Brulee and Tiramisu. Yes, please!! You put good creme brulee in front of me and you've won my heart. So pretty much that picture sums up my two favorite things in life - a bowl full of fried cream and sugar and my adorable husband.

It's not that often that Jared and I step up our restraunt game and go somewhere nice. (It's a mutual thing - we can be homebodies most of the time) So when we do go out to celebrate like this we always enjoy our conversations and feel so relaxed. Last night was no exception. My hubby is the best. I wouldn't want to spend an evening like that with anyone else. When we finally meandered home, there was a giant box by our front door.... and what it contained was just as much a birthday suprise for me as it was for the birthday boy.

The real deal. Fresh. Hand picked. Front yard grown. Arizona grapefruit from Grandma. It's like spring and summer and my birthday all wrapped up in a box. Over 2 dozen bursts of goodnes. Man, I love grapefruit. THANK YOU GRANDMA BARB!! What a treat.

So we closed Jared's birthday off with grapefruit. It was a great day, and I just love celebrating. So... happy birthday sweetie! I couldn't be more thankful and happy that I get to celebrate you!

Girls Weekend

I'm back! I've been thinking about wanting to blog for the last probably 3 weeks... but as the phrase goes, we've been a bit too busy living life to write about it! So what better way than to jump back in than to recap my weekend (in June....) with the girls at Kelly's cabin!

Aah, Lake Belle Taine, you were good to us! Thankfully we weren't quite as white at the end of the trip as we were here... in the middle of all that June rain, we somehow managed to squeak a fabulous weekend of sunshine in! Thank you Lord!

One late afternoon (post sun exposure) we headed "into town" where Annie, Katie and I (literally) got dumped off the side of the road at a candy store, while Kelly and Rachel ran
some grocery errands. We're talking, old time candy here. It was so quaint and cute! Thankfully I only came home with a small bag.

Ok, in truth, after Kelly and Rach came back I ended up adding a little more to that bag.......
I DO still have the pieces I was planning to give away... (oh yah, Dad... I have pumpkin pie taffy for you!!) We finished with a stop at Compeneros in Dorset for chips and salsa and some famous margaritas!

And what would a cabin weekend getaway be without a dinner over the fire? It was a must. We might not be as good at cooking over the fire as our guys are.... (they had french toast and all the breakfast fixings at their man camp weekend right before ours... post on that to come from Jared soon...) but we sure know how to enjoy it! And thank you Velda for teaching me how to roast a killer marshmallow.

After a wonderfully relaxing Saturday (the 25th of June might I add... ;) the girls surprised me with Happy Birthday cupcakes and singing! The cupcakes would have been enough guys, really... ;) Just kidding! I loved it all and it was such a fun way to spend my birthday weekend! And MN Twins cupcakes at that. They know me too well. The tea light made the final touch. I now understood why we got dumped on the curb by the candy store. :)

Thank you everyone for all the birthday texts, facebooks, and love! I did have a great birthday! And Kelly, Katie, Rach, and Annie.... I love you guys so much! Thanks for a fabulous weekend of relaxation and FUN in the sun!!
